Knitting shop proving to be a big hit in the town
Posted in Start
Vivian Westwood believes that knitting has positive health benefits through stress reduction and relaxation. Research suggests that similar to yoga and meditation, knitting can help to beat stress, anxiety and depression.
The budding businessman decided to put his money behind his belief and opened a traditional wool shop on Topping Street last year aptly named Vivian Westwools.
Vivian said: “When I was growing up, I dreamed of being a fashion designer but ended up working in retail management. I found the stress became too much and my health suffered, resulting in high blood pressure.
“I took up knitting and crocheting as a means of relieving stress and found I was much calmer as a result. I became addicted!
“There are few specialist traditional wool shops in the area and I was getting disillusioned having to buy online, so the obvious answer was to open my own shop.
“I have found the perfect location, the perfect shop, and created an oasis of calm where people can come, relax, sit and chat, join in our weekly knitting club and buy a vast range of products at great prices.
“Blackpool Council’s Get Started team keep in touch and have given me invaluable support in developing my online presence, as well as simply being there for me, which is often underestimated when you are in that difficult first year of trading.”
Cllr Mark Smith, Blackpool Council’s Cabinet Member for Business and Economic Development, said: “It’s fantastic to see that Vivian has turned his dream into a reality by setting up his own business in the town centre and that he surrounds himself with people who share his passion.
“Vivian is benefiting from ongoing support from Blackpool Council. 90% of the businesses that Get Started has helped in the last two years are still operating and in some cases, doing very well indeed. That’s because businesses can still benefit from our expert advice and support even after they are up and running.”
