Thousands of businesses and employees across Lancashire are set to benefit from free workforce training after Lancashire County Council launched a new £5.6 million programme which will be delivered by some of the county’s leading training providers.

Executive chairman of medical device pioneers CME Medical, Stephen Thorpe has been announced as Entrepreneur of the Year (in the category of Business Products and Services) in the Ernst and Young North of England Entrepreneur Of The Year. Mr Thorpe (pictured) said: “I was honoured to receive this award, not just for myself but on behalf of the entire company. It’s a reflection of the hard work and commitment of our team both here in Blackpool and across the UK. “This level of teamwork, and a dedication to developing an impressive portfolio of medical devices for patients in hospitals and in the community, has seen our turnover grow to £14m. A consortium of businesses have joined forces with Lancaster University to form a group to help fight cyber crime. The North West Cyber Security Cluster will enable businesses in the region to use the expertise of a pool of experts with the skills to put in place protective measure to reduce the risks posed by cyber security threats.

Blackpool Tourism Academy gets green light »

Blackpool has secured £1m to set up a new Tourism Academy aimed at raising the skills of people who work in the resort’s visitor economy. The funding comes from the government’s Employer Ownership Pilot (EOP), and will co-fund £2m investment in skills training planned by several leading tourism employers within Blackpool over the next 3 years.
