An astonishing number of new businesses are opening in Blackpool.

A huge 750 new businesses have been set up with the help of Blackpool Council’s Economic Development Division over the last few years.

The Get Started advice service, which has helped 69 start ups in the last 10 months, is turning the town back into a hub for independent firms.

And there are success stories everywhere with local people realising their dreams.

Take Oscar-nominated stop-motion animator, Chris Gough. The talented 30-year-old from South Shore scored a hit working as part of the production team on the hit animated film “The Pirates!”.

Now, with the help of the Get Started team, he’s looking to go out on his own, basing himself at the council’s Illuminations depot.

“I want to set up a local base that I can work from and see where things develop,” he said.

“We’re a good team,” Joanne said.

And Sharen Rusling also gets help from her husband John who helps her run S&J Fresh Five-a-Day on Lytham Road.

“I lost my job in 2011,” recalls Sharen, “but I didn’t want to be unemployed. Business is booming “We’ve only been open three weeks but we’ve got a nice steady client base going.”

Like Susan Frary, who runs a plus-size clothing stallin Abingdon Street market, they’ve been inspired to give a small business a try.
