Lighting the Way: How Penrhyn Hotel Have Cut Costs with Sustainability Support

As active members of Stay Blackpool, they discovered the Blackpool Net Zero Business Academy and applied for support through the Winter Warmer Campaign. It gave the couple the opportunity to make meaningful changes in their business and to the environment. The Winter Warmer campaign was well received by Blackpool businesses when it was announced in early 2025. Following the launch there was an influx of Blackpool companies who took the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint and start decarbonising their business by talking to the Academy’s sustainability specialists Megan Tucker and Caitlin Sanderson.
Research shows that hotel guests are increasingly looking for eco-friendly stays. As a small guesthouse, the Penrhyn Hotel understands that even small changes can make a big difference. By improving energy efficiency and exploring sustainable solutions, Caron and Lawrie are not only cutting costs but also meeting the growing demand for greener accommodation. They are showing that independent businesses can lead the way in responsible hospitality.
Personalised Support for a Greener Future
Through the Academy, Caron and Lawrie were connected with sustainability specialist Megan Tucker, who carried out an in-depth energy audit of the hotel. This resulted in a personalised decarbonisation action plan that identified key energy-saving measures.
In Blackpool, hospitality is at the heart of our community, and we're proud to help local businesses, like the Penrhyn Hotel, make impactful changes that benefit both the environment and their bottom line,” says Megan. “Simplifying sustainability for businesses through tailored support is what I love most. It's about helping them thrive and reducing their costs while contributing to a greener future for all.
The plan advised that the Penrhyn Hotel considered upgrading their lighting to energy-efficient LEDs and install motion sensors to further reduce unnecessary energy use. Caron shared, "The whole process was so quick and easy with Megan's support. She knew exactly what to suggest and pointed us in the right direction to implement the support."
Tangible Results with Expert Guidance
Following the energy audit and decarbonisation action plan, the couple worked with one of the Academy’s trusted local suppliers, Lighting House. The company offers a variety of services to assist decarbonisation. They conducted a lighting assessment of the premises and followed up by installing motion sensors in guest en-suite bathrooms. The Academy also helped them apply for grant funding, which covered the costs of the upgrades, including PIR sensors in key areas of the hotel.
Caron says, "We are already seeing benefits in cost savings and are really grateful for all the help Megan and the Net Zero experts from the Academy have provided. Megan guided us through the whole process from start to end in a very helpful, courteous, and professional way."
Planning for a Sustainable Future
With their leasehold in place for at least another 4 years, Caron and Lawrie are already evaluating their next steps. Thanks to the support from the Academy, they have a clear understanding of how to continue their sustainability journey.
The couple encourage other Blackpool businesses to take advantage of the support available through the Blackpool Net Zero Business Academy. Caron says, "It has been such an easy process to follow, with evident energy cost savings from the implementation of the decarbonisation action plan."
