Blackpool Businesses Have Saved Enough Carbon to Power the Illuminations for Four Years*

This year’s Blackpool Illuminations were switched on by popular singer Olly Murs, and the Blackpool Net Zero Business Academy is proud to highlight that the carbon savings it has helped local businesses achieve since 2023 would be enough to power the Illuminations for four years*. In total, the Academy’s sustainability specialists have supported businesses in saving 1,058 tonnes of carbon.
Angela Kershaw, Head of Business Growth at the Academy says “What makes this achievement so powerful is how tangible it feels. We often talk about tonnes of carbon saved, but when you translate that into the energy needed to power something as iconic as the Blackpool Illuminations for four years, it suddenly becomes real. It shows just how much forward-thinking Blackpool businesses are already achieving, and it’s a clear sign of the brighter, greener future we’re building together.”
Bright ideas in action
Sustainability Specialists at the Academy have worked with Blackpool businesses of all sizes, providing fully funded support that includes detailed energy audits of premises, a personalised decarbonisation action plan, and practical guidance to help put the recommendations into practice.
Across Blackpool, more businesses are embracing greener practices. Hotel 242, for example, has upgraded to energy-efficient lighting and appliances. Family-run favourites like Notarianni have explored installing solar panels and voltage optimisers, while Tyson Construction has electrified part of its car fleet. These are just a few of the businesses supported by the Academy whose efforts have helped save a total of 1,058 tonnes of carbon.
"As a child, I loved coming to see the Blackpool Illuminations,” says Caitlin Sanderson, Sustainability Specialist at the Academy. “It was always such a magical experience. Now, knowing that through our work with local businesses we’ve not only helped them save money but also contributed to saving enough energy to power the Illuminations for four years is incredibly special. It’s a wonderful reminder of my own childhood memories and a way to help create lasting experiences for many more visitors to enjoy."
