Former Business Growth Manager David Slater Passes Away After Long Illness
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Slater, former Business Growth Manager within the Council’s Business Growth Team, following a long illness.
Prior to joining the authority he held high-profile roles within business support and marketing at a regional level. We were fortunate to benefit from his expertise for a decade before David retired from Blackpool Council in early 2023.
Together with his small but impactful team, David played a key role in supporting numerous new and growing businesses in the town. He was instrumental in transforming Blackpool Enterprise Centre into a thriving hub for businesses and contributed to the design of the new serviced office and co-working space currently taking shape as part of the Stanley Buildings redevelopment on Church Street.
Peter Legg, David's former manager, paid his tribute:
"It is difficult to convey the profound sense of loss and regret that David was unable to fully enjoy his well-deserved retirement. I had the privilege of working with David for a decade, during which time he proved to be an exceptional manager and a truly likable person.
During the pandemic, David was pivotal in developing grant support initiatives for Blackpool businesses that would otherwise have missed out on government assistance. Thanks to his meticulous attention to detail and unwavering dedication, hundreds of businesses received millions in discretionary grant aid, greatly benefiting the town's business community.
Beyond his professional achievements David was a mentor to his team, from up and coming younger colleagues to unwavering support to those who needed him most. He was my right hand man in so many things and we shared many discussions with good humour. He never once said I was misguided about anything (even if I was) but in his own calm and considered style had a way of steering us all in the right direction.
I had the pleasure of visiting David recently, and his eyes lit up when I mentioned the promotion of his beloved Ipswich Town to the Premier League. Last season, he had rented a box at Preston North End for his family, and although they lost, he treasured the experience.
David will be fondly remembered by all who knew and worked with him, and our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family during this difficult time."
