Local Businesses Celebrated For Leading The Way In Sustainability

Blackpool Businesses are being celebrated for committing to a greener future. Since its launch in November 2023 the Blackpool Net Zero Business Academy has helped local businesses reduce their carbon footprint and energy costs, providing fully funded net zero support.

To recognise the commitment of businesses that have embraced the Academy's support, sustainability specialists Megan Tucker and Caitlin Sanderson have been visiting businesses, accompanied by Councillor Mark Smith, to present them with certificates of achievement. These certificates highlight the businesses' dedication to sustainability, their proactive steps towards net zero emissions, and their contributions to Blackpool’s carbon reduction ambitions.

Councillor Mark Smith praised the efforts of these businesses, stating: “It’s fantastic to see local businesses leading the way in sustainability. Many Blackpool organisations have taken real, proactive steps towards net zero, setting an outstanding example for the Blackpool business community while reducing their carbon footprint and strengthening their business for the future. Congratulations on this well-earned recognition, and thank you for helping to build a greener, more sustainable Blackpool.”

Megan and Caitlin have been inspired by all of the businesses they have supported, witnessing first-hand the tangible impact that the Academy’s initiatives can have. Megan shared:

“Caitlin and I came away from these visits feeling extremely proud, not just of the work we’ve done, but of the excellent businesses we work with and their commitment to making Blackpool a more sustainable place.”

Among the businesses visited were Force Technology, MC Repairs, and Top Gun, each demonstrating how net zero initiatives are benefiting their company:

  • Force Technology has benefited from a personalised decarbonisation action plan and an eco-grant from the Academy, which has contributed towards an intelligent air system. This system is expected to cut energy usage by 40%. The business is also working towards ISO 14001 (environmental) and ISO 45001 (health and safety) certifications, further strengthening their commitment to sustainability.
  • MC Repairs has installed solar panels, which has contributed to a 60% reduction in carbon emissions. Their efforts have gained recognition beyond Blackpool, with the business being shortlisted as a finalist in the Environmental, Social, and Governance category at the Lancashire Business View Red Rose Awards. Councillor Mark Smith recognised how Managing Director Carl Wise had grown the business while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability.
  • Top Gun is expanding its operations with a new development next to the current business, featuring energy-efficient measures such as LED lighting and sensor systems. These upgrades were supplied by Thompsons, another business who was supported through an eco-grant. The business is now in discussions about installing solar panels, demonstrating how Blackpool businesses are collaborating and keeping sustainability efforts within the local community.

“Delivering certificates to businesses we have helped is a recognition of their commitment to sustainability. It is a passion of ours to continue helping other Blackpool businesses on their journey to becoming a net zero business” says Caitlin.

The Blackpool Net Zero Business Academy is continuing to offer fully funded support to businesses looking to start or continue their own net zero journey. With expert guidance readily available Blackpool businesses are encouraged to take action towards a greener, more cost-effective future.
